“A Ballad for Myself” was written in the infancy of the COVID-19 Pandemic as a response to both the pandemic itself as well as the George Floyd incident and all the unrest that followed. The piece is a somber reflection of the angst, unease, and upset that I felt during this period. There are no improvised solos, however, just about every instrument gets a moment in the spotlight. The lead saxophone must play soprano for this chart to function. The baritone saxophonist must be comfortable with altissimo G and A for their featured moment. There is a vibraphone part that is optional, but adds a tremendous amount to the color.
